What are Flash Autoclaves used for?

Rob Dyer Surgical
RDS Series Flash Autoclave for high-speed sterilization in operating theatres

Flash autoclaves are an essential piece of equipment across healthcare, pharmaceuticals and research. They use high-pressure steam to sterilize equipment and materials in a matter of minutes, a fraction of the hours a traditional cycle can take, which matters where turnaround time is short.

What is a flash autoclave?

A flash autoclave is a sterilizer built for speed. Where conventional autoclaves can take hours to complete a cycle, a flash cycle typically runs for only a few minutes while still achieving full sterilization through carefully controlled, high-pressure steam.

What are they used for?

  • Medical instruments: surgical instruments such as scalpels, forceps and clamps must be sterile to prevent the spread of infection during surgery; flash autoclaves turn instruments around quickly between cases.
  • Laboratory equipment: pipettes, petri dishes and test tubes must be free of contamination to protect experimental results.
  • Pharmaceutical products: vials, ampoules and the containers used to store and transport medicines are sterilized to guarantee safety and efficacy.

How they work

Equipment is loaded into the chamber and the chamber is sealed. Steam is then pumped in, with temperature and pressure carefully controlled to ensure effective sterilization while minimising any risk of damage to the load. The high-pressure steam penetrates the instruments and materials, killing the microorganisms it contacts, and because the cycle is short, instruments needed at short notice are back in service in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a flash autoclave?

A flash autoclave is a sterilizer built for speed: it uses carefully controlled high-pressure steam to sterilize instruments in a matter of minutes, where conventional cycles can take hours.

What are flash autoclaves used for?

They are used to rapidly sterilize surgical instruments such as scalpels, forceps and clamps between cases, laboratory equipment such as pipettes and petri dishes, and pharmaceutical containers like vials and ampoules.

How long does a flash sterilization cycle take?

A typical flash cycle takes only a few minutes, with temperature and pressure carefully controlled to achieve full sterilization while minimising any risk of damage to the load.

When should a facility choose a flash autoclave over a conventional autoclave?

Flash autoclaves suit loads needed at short notice, instruments turned around quickly between procedures. Conventional autoclaves remain the mainstay for full scheduled loads; most CSSDs run both alongside each other.
